Moving Tips

Here are some quick moving tips to keep in mind.

  • Obtain the brochure Ready to Move and the booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Check with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Use only registered movers.  Does your mover have a USDOT number registered with FMSCA?
  • Clear out unwanted goods – hold a garage sale.
  • Get rid of flammables- paint, petrol, gas cylinders.
  • Empty fuel from mowers, clippers, trimmers, and so on.
  • Clothes- do you need them all?  Charity ships may want them.
  • Separate books – disposable, family reading, valuable.
  • Check all electrical goods – will they work in the new home?
  • Start making up your change of address list.
  • Arrange to have mail forwarded.
  • Arrange termination date for electricity, gas, oil, telephone and other main suppliers.
  • If you are taking electrical goods, such as a stereo, see if you still have the original boxes.
  • Have rugs cleaned.
  • If you have children, separate cherished toys to travel with you.
  • Round up personal documentation – marriage/birth certificates, drivers licenses and so on.
  • Keep passports separate so they are not packed.
  • Want to take the car? Check on import regulations and the duty payable.
  • With regards to family pets – make sure vaccinations and documentation are up to date.
  • Will your new home be ready? If not, you need to arrange temporary storage.
  • Shops, schools, theaters, life styles – its never too early to find out about your new home.
  • Start running down freezer stock.
  • Arrange your finances- Determine how you are paying for the move by credit card, Cashiers Check. In
  • getting a Cashiers Check often times it is wise pay in advance ( because of being lost or stolen ) or give it to
  • the driver on delivery. also some funds take days if not longer to transfer to your new bank. Then close or
  • transfer bank accounts, saving accounts, and so on, if necessary.

Know your Rights and Responsibilities Before Selecting a Mover. Before moving your household goods, movers are required to give you a brochure ( Ready to Move ? ) and a booklet entitled ( Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move ). They provide basic information that will help you understand the documents that a mover will ask you to sign. The booklet  also explains your rights if your household good are lost or damaged. Copies of the brochure and booklet can be downloaded from the Web site www.protectyourmove.gov . which has additional helpful consumer information.Your Rights and Responsibility When Moving
